The Basics of Sociology

Interested in learning more about Sociology? If so, you’ve come to the right place. Here, we will discuss its goals, methods, and sources. Read on to discover the basics of Sociology. After reading this article, you will be well on your way to becoming a Sociologist. Let’s dive in! Posted on September 20, 2014, in Sociology, this article will shed some light on the field. And while it’s not the most comprehensive article in the world, it’s a good place to start.

Sociology

In sociology, the study of social life is based on the study of organizations and groups. Since humans do not have animal instincts, we rely on social institutions and groups to regulate our behavior. Sociology studies the formation, functioning, and demise of organizations. These groups can be as basic as a family or a community or as specialized as peer groups and volunteer associations. These groups also affect the way people live and think. The study of social life is a broad field, spanning many disciplines, including political, economic, and social.

Ancient Greeks constituted the basis for sociology. They distinguished between two forms of nature and a human community. The former was defined as “what emerges of itself.” The latter was a set of human conventions. The latter were referred to as “nomos” and were studied in Histories by Herodotus. Even today, sociology continues to study the social life of ancient societies, including the pre-historic world.

Its methods

One of the main principles of sociology is observation. The sociologist records behavior of people under the same conditions that he observes. This method requires that the observers keep their identities hidden, and measurements are made in secret. The next part of the scientific method is recording the data. These observations must be objective and precise, and the sociologist must document the situation as he has observed it. Here are some of the most important aspects of sociology’s methods.

The Ideal Type Method. Max Weber and other sociologists used this method to construct an ideal out of concrete cases. For example, a sociologist researching friendship might create an ideal conception of what friendship is. The same would be true of democracy. By studying the ways people behave in real situations, the sociologist can make concrete changes to policy and ensure that it remains as beneficial to society as possible. The ideal type method can also be used to understand social phenomena.

Its sources

The term “sociology” has its roots in ancient Greek philosophy. The word socius means “companionship” and “fellowship” and the suffix -logy refers to the study of society. This concept has roots in both Greek and Latin. The word nomos refers to human conventions, such as dress, food, and religion. The Ancient Greeks made distinctions between different societies and reflected this in their histories.

Social sciences, including sociology, are social disciplines that use research to determine the structure of society. This chapter of the book focuses on sociological research methods, but much of what you learn will also apply to the social sciences as a whole. So, it is important to understand what sociology is, and where it derives its concepts. The next section will discuss some of the sources of sociology. The sources of sociology vary.

Its impact on business

Using social enterprise to meet basic business needs is an easy way to boost corporate sustainability. While spending remains the same, value increases. Social enterprise can meet basic business needs while improving social conditions. And a simple program like social procurement can benefit both the company and the communities it serves. The social enterprise sector is growing at a rapid pace, with a global market potential estimated at $12 trillion. SAP, for instance, has invested 2.5% of its addressable spend in social enterprises in the UK alone. The company plans to continue this program worldwide.

According to a study by the World Economic Forum, a third of millenials and millennials say they are more likely to purchase products and services from companies that do good things for the community. As a result, socially conscious companies have a competitive advantage. In addition to goodwill, running a socially responsible business is a morally essential approach to business. Moreover, it has a tangible commercial advantage.

Its future

Sociofy’s Future concerns the future of social science and sociology. The book includes contributions from leading sociologists such as Wendell Bell, Kai T. Erikson, Robert Boguslaw, James Mau, and Ivar Oxaal. However, it also includes a number of provocative opinions from scholars whose views are not necessarily mainstream. As such, this book should be of interest to anyone who is interested in the future of sociology.

The field of sociology is still relatively young, having been born just under two centuries ago. The discipline’s roots are in urban studies, one of the first areas to be studied by sociologists, Friedrich Engels. This area is ripe for the future of sociology, since it could raise issues like urban pollution and booming social media. However, before we can determine what the field’s future holds, we should have a look at its past.
